Brain coral dead,starfish dead.......?

Hi All, This weekend we put in a brain coral,and a true percula,and a starfish (small red one with black dots) The star fish looked like it was dissolving and the brain coral was doing the same. We used some zap gel and some epoxy to mount some corals and we think it could be that that killed them ? The fish,cleaner shrimp,and pepermint shrimp are fine the water perameters are perfect-only alk is 4.0 and ph is 8.0 what gives? Thanks,

Boy, that's a tough one. I would not think it would be the zap gel.

What kind of epoxy did you use? Was it sold for reef tanks or off the shelf at the hardware store?

Hey Laura- We used the epoxy from the LFS Red corraline color(thats what it said but its more white than red when mixed) We had a tubastria that broke and we stuck him back together and puttied him to the side of LR. All of the water perameters are great- salinity-1.023/1.024,calcium-420,alk-4.0,mag-1390,ph-8.0 ? temp was 82 yesterday. ????

That is pretty quick for a brain and a star to go downhill (since the weekend). I would not blame the epoxy or the glue. I use that stuff all the time.

I wonder if those two inverts had less than desirable treatment at the store and you only saw the effects once they got home. Do you by any chance test the water of the the corals you bring home? I have before, and it can be quite enlightening!!

Sorry to say, I do not have any other theories on what killed your critters.

Yeah- thats what I'm thinking to damn LFS! That's another $40.00 I just threw in the trash can..... We're going to keep what we have and just let it grow.... I probably should test their water I'll pull out my complete salifert kit and pull up a chair and piss them off ha ha!!!! ("hey -your blocking our walkway") too bad.!!!
