Success stories of keeping Goniopora?

Hi all,

Has anyone experience of keep Gonio successful here? And how does it distribute/reproduce? Whats the success rate in a marine tank? Hope someone can guide me along to clear my doubt.. :roll:

I wouldn't get one. Some have reported success and budding of new colonies, but the vast majority of reports on Gonis is 6 months to a year of success followed by rapid decline.

Righty, what's lacking in our tanks that this species succumbs to rapid decline?

My LFS sells it, but he recommended to me not to get it, exactly for that reason.

As far as I can tell, we don't really know. I suspect they are lagoonal, and like 'dirty' water, but don't take that as truth!

No one really knows why gonipora dies. My old LFS used to get it in from time to time as well, and always advised agains customers purchasing it because it just dies.

I don't believe that there is such a thing as a success story with this coral. In my mind, a success story is one where an animal lives for two years or more. It's not a success if it's less than that, and I have never heard of anyone keeping gonipora alive that long.

I bought one by mistake a few months ago. I've read some people keeping them for years and actually having them reproduce. Unfortunately the amount of work to make that happen is for people who love this animal and are willing to spend that kind of time. Some of the success stories were feeding their goni's with skimmate :? I'm going to try that, I notice when I skim heavily my goni doesn't look to good. I guess the best advise is read then buy!

The little bit I have read on the subject seems to indicate they preferre a little more nutrient rich water has righty has mentioned.

I say avoid it to be safe...unless thats all you want to keep...
