Don't get one?

Looking at the tanks of people here that have healthy looking anemones, they all have a lot more light than your setup.

Try a colony of Green Hairy Mushrooms. They are a LOT easier to care for and they look very nice IMO.

BTA (bubble tip anemone) would be a good pick.. i would add LTA (long tip anemone) but as Robert pointed out, your lighting is just a tad underpowered for your tanks depth and these guys like the sand... that is straight up opinion there regarding your lighting, some guys say that additional feeding will make up for low lighting but i have not seen this successfully done.

i would advise that you find an aquacultured clone of a hardy species like a green BTA. often reefers have them split in their tanks and they should be fairly easy to find. i would find this to be the ethical thing to do as anemones pay a hefty price in this hobby.. as far as inverts are concerned... and i don't think we should be taking any more from the wild as they are readily available in aquacultured specimens.

other advice would be to prepare your tank for one before adding one.
powerheads are too often the death of anemones. there can be NO high flow screened suction in the tank or it will find it sooner or later... believe me, i have destructively illustrated this more than once
i am presently considering what to do about my own tank.. i don't have any anemones currently but have plans for one and i need to do something about my stream pump beforehand.
anyway, good luck.

Its a coralife lamp setup with 2 65watts pc bulbs. I was told you could keep some soft corals with it....so anemone's are out of the question??? Should I upgrade my light??

I'd agree with Podman even if you had a lot more lighting. If it's your first Anemone I wouldn't attempt anything other than a propogated Bubble-Tip. I actually think Rose Anemone are hardier but Green are tougher than most too. They are still not going to be easy by any stretch in a young 29 gal.

Your lighting is fine for most softies. Anemone are generally not classed with softies as far as lighting needs though. I really suggest you find an easier to keep host besides an Anemone but it's definately your choice.

i would not say they are out of the question but more light would be better.

anemones are not easy to care for like some soft corals. i would think that an experienced reefkeeper would be able to keep an anemone in your tank... a novice might look at a surrogate cnidarian host like sarcophyton for a percula.. they often will take up residence in this leather coral.

Clowns will host in just about anything! Hairy shrooms wil get torn to pieces in short order. I've had bta's in both a 29 and 20L with 130watts of pc, and neither did well.

I have several mated pairs and I give them all Green Hairy Mushrooms. They don't get torn up at all that I've seen. They seem to thrive in the presence of the Clownfish.

Maroon Clownfish would be an entirely different story though.

I have the same fixture as you Submariner in my 29 and I have kept a condy at the bottom of the tank for almost a year. He has grown a good deal and is always open.

With that said, I would wait until you believe you are fully ready to take under the care of anemone. Condy's are not natural hosts, which sucks since they are a little easier. Clowns can host in many other things too, but thats besides the point.

If you eventually do decide to get an anemone then I would go with a BTA as they are relatively easy, look good and will be accepted by a variety of clowns.

My Clarkii distroyed some brown hairys and he was less than an inch long! Now he has 2 bta's and some ric's to play in 8O . I thought he had torn the bta up yesterday, but I discovered that it had split. My ocellarius is a much gentler guy, his bta is smaller than he is and just sorta snuggles up and under. Funny looking, with his head and tail sticking out.

It's tough, but doable. The rewards are worth the trouble. Here's mine:

speaking of high flow screened areas, like a Maxi-flo 1200?? if so the screen that comes with it not alot can get thru, but a BTA might get injured on it, if I was to put a pipe like used for UG filter on it, and drill holes or something would it make it safe for a BTA?? I want to get one eventualy *looks at the new one in knowse tank* and I dont wanna hurt the poor guy by me just not prepareing

For Power Heads use a sponge that will prevent them from getting hurt.

Question tho, are the clowns tank-raised??

My Percula Clowns are tank raised and have been in the tank with the rBTA for 6months now or so and have not even bothered with it ...they sleep by this one rock under the sponge of the powerhead. Tank Raised might not even bother w. Anemone's, so really dont get your hopes up that it will happen.

If they are not tank raised there is probably a more likelyhood of it happening.

My black ocellarius is tank raised by Fishey Business in Bowling Green. I brought home 2 very small ones (<1/2 inch) and while they were floating in the bag, they were trying to swim for the bta  As soon as they hit the water, in they went, both stayed there until one decided it wanted to carpet surf  The clarkii on the other hand, was pretty dumb, took him over a month to find the hairys, and then less than a week to love them to death. After adding a bta for him, it took about another week for him to host in it.

I have two tank raised percs, but they haven't bothered much with the LTA, now just over 2 mths old. (Originally about 4" wide) It's doing well under an aqualight 2x65w PC + 2x20w NO. I've stopped feeding it a few weeks ago. (It was usually every 4 days or so.) It's become a nice brown/green, esp. brown when the natural light hits the tank for few hours a day.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it may be a home for the clowns. I guess they could just as easily nest in the leather or the hairy shrooms, so I've read...

I was worried I'd be pushing it by trying an anemone, but it seems to have worked so far in a 29gal. G'luck.
