Hi everyone. I've collected shimp from sargassum weed before and have been keeping them in a FO aquarium for over a year. They are sometimes neatly colored and patterned and interesting to watch, especially for free. Does anyone know if these are safe to put in a reef tank? Also, I've come across other algae while clamming which is populated with copepods (I think they are, they're about 1-2 mm long and look like curled up crustations). Is it safe to seed my tank with these critters or am I asking for some unwanted infestation of something else by doing this? I don't currently have many corals, but I will soon and don't want to create a problem. Lastly, is sargassum weed a good algae to grow in a fuge for absorbing nitrates? Thanks all.

The weed is nice for refugium, but not sure if you are able to keep it down there long as they hunger for lights. In lower light environment, they barely grow and does not help much in terms of nitrate uptake.

Need pics of the shrimps, and......... no thanks to feet rubbing. Do you do backs?

Where exactly are you collecting from? This shrimp seems to be a typical food grade shrimp that runs through the St Johns River here where I live. I kept one in my reef but he starved because there wasnt enough "crap" for it to eat. As for Sargassum Weed, you MUST have halides. Sargassum actually floats ontop of the water column in the ocean so imagine the lighting requirements. I kept a sargassum cutting in my tank and it lasted a week or two. Then the snails ate it. They loved it like crack cocaine lol. But there are several small pieces left in my tank on the rocks but they havent grown any.

This was collected from Panama City FL but I also can get them from Daytona area. When I was younger, I scooped sargassum weed from Palm Beach FL and found seahorses and sagassum fish as well as similar shrimp.

those curled up looking little creatures you mentioned are great for seeding your tank. -that looks sorta like a peppermint shrimp. i have one..but he's worthless as breasts on a bull. he eats the leftovers, and sometimes steals the food right out of my LTA's tentacles. i haven't been able to catch him as of yet, but when i do, it's to the fuge he will go.
