buy a cheapy, and when the filters need changing..buy top of the line ones if you like....then you have a top of the line unit.
don't let anyone tell you one plastic filter housing is any different than another. and they are certainly not worth twice as much money. i don't care what name is on it.
However, Spectrapure R/O housings are not compatible with other membranes (I believe), thus you have to get a new housing if you want a different 'brand' of membrane.
We use a Spectrapure unit at my work; and it works great and almost never screws up (as in once so far). However, their prices are easily double some other places, so even if the filters screw up twice as fast, you still are not loosing money, just time.

Just be careful that you don't buy one of those mis-configured ebay systems with a horizontal DI routed to a GAC stage.

Goto Buckeyefieldsupply.com and get one. They are LOTS cheaper than other brands, and they work just as good, if not better. I've had my 75g/day RODI unit for well over 3 years, and I have absolutely NO complaints. CS at Buckeye is first class too.

X - You'll want to remove the GAC that comes after the DI stage -the water is as clean as your system can make it after the DI - running it through GAC after the DI is counter-productive.
Also - you can get better treatment, and likely longer life from your resin if you unclip it and orient it vertically with bottom up flow.

Sorry to threadjack, but I had a question. For the first time I'm setting up only one small tank (as opposed to having a few larger ones), and need at most 15 gallons/week. I was wondering if an RO/DI unit being run once a week would be detremental to the unit? I don't have space to put up a holding tank/float, and hate the idea of letting it run needlessly wasting the water and electricity running the well pump.

For typical tap water, in our opinon that system has an unneeded stage - the second carbon block. One good carbon block is sufficient for normal situations.
So we prefer this configuration under normal conditions (for example, tap water containing chlorine):
And for tap water containing chloramines:
where the empty second stage in the pic above would contain a refillable cartridge containing catalytic GAC.
We end up customizing these configurations as needed for specific situations, such as:
needing to remove flouride
needing an extra DI resin stage, or a DI stage with resin mixed to specifically treat silicates, phosphates, nitrates, etc.
feed water with a heavy sediment load
