Tank Thread Project Clay Brick

We have a crazy idea of reefscaping a 150 gallon tank with red clay brick and cement that we can’t get out of our head. The setup is designed for SPS, LPS, softie, and reef fish. The system only included bricks, cement, sand, a small in tank skimmer, a small in tank filter, maybe some algae, few pumps, three LED lights, two fans, and an ATO. No external filter or sump is use in this system. There’s many fellow reefers that offered us help, their name will be honored on the post along the way. I wonder a bit about the cement's effect on the PH of your water. From what I understand, it can raise PH significantly, depending on the amount of calcium hydroxide used in the mix. Curious about what you are going to do to counteract the effect. Also, I have read that the brick can be high in Iron and PO4 and eventually break down in marine systems.

Either way, I applaud your creativity and wish you the best on your project.

Thank you, I’m concerned about the pH also. I’ll test how high the pH is in freshwater first; if too high, cycle the tank with only sodium chloride. Drained and fill with reef salt, then cycle with macro algae and phytoplankton. Hope not to go through double cycling.
In theory, trace amount of Iron oxide, aka GFO, should help to lower Phosphate. If not, I’ll be looking at a glowing green tank for awhile.
Will update soon with all the chaos that I set my self up with. It’s going to be fun.
