Tank Temps

Is 74 too low for my tank? Livestock is listed in my sig

75 for me is too cold even though most websites say 72-78.I keep it at 78.Others will keep it at different temps.

My corals seem to do better when the temp is around 80 as it is closer to temperatures out on the reef

Actually, I run my tank at a higher temp involuntarily during the summer heat wave. =P

I keep mine set at 78. In the winter I think its better to have higher temps. My rationale is if the power goes out and no ones around, it'll take longer before it gets dangerously cold.

But keep in mind higher temps means higher consumption rate and waste = NO3.

Okay i keep mine at 79.1 Day and 77.0 night the light i have raises the heat a litttle but 74 isnt BAD but its a little chilly for your livestock grantingin the wild it can get to 74 it usually stays ay 76 78

My opinion from this thread is that...as long as your in the reasonable range(76-82) You should be alright....
I believe the key is to KEEP YOUR TEMP CONSTANT
I keep mine at 79, but it gets as warm 80.6 in the day time...


When I first had my tank, my thermometer was broken...it showed the temp at 79, but it was 84!!!!!! for a few months. The corals all seemed happy, and they opened up alot....ppl would even comment on how gd the tank looked(ppl in the hobby/industry), so I think even high temps are ok, as long as the temp is consistent. Of course, the higher the temp, the higher the rate of evaporation.

Let me be the first to tell you that is not true..:tired:

Ich's cycle speeds up in warmer water, the only way to kill it is to raise the temp high enough so EVERYTHING is dead in your tank.:lol2: The suggestion of raising the water temp while being fishless is to speed up the ich cycle. RIF.

I keep my water temp around 77-78 in the winter and 82 in the summer to lower my electric use to heat and cool the tanks.

Rookie is right though check your thermometers i have 2 to make sure and just figure if you have MH light it might produce heat so be careful on how close you keep it

I keep mine between 76.5-79 year round.
