how deep should a deep sand bed be?...
not housing any fish that requires it, mainly to be used to help reduce nitrates...

I think deeper the better, I would say anything under 4 inch isnt consider dsb. Some live sand brand claims 2 inch is good enough to reduce nitrate.

It SHOULD be as deep as you personally prefer. This is a widely debated topic ad nauseum. Whatever you like is what it should be. I like only a couple of inches in the display for aesthetic reasons. Any DSB IMO, should be in a remote tank so that you can take it off line with some ball valves. Once again, JMO.

was thinking of going with fine sand, more surface per square inch for bacteria to grow, but am afraid it will create "sand storm" caused by strong current...
