Hi
I just upgraded the lights on my 72g bow tank to t-5 8x54watt with splash guard. The new light is currently 2? off the top of the glass.

Questions;
If I leave the light 2? off the top of tank can I leave glass cover over the tank or is it taking away from the lights job? (I?m not worried about the look)
Also I feel 2? off the tank isn?t enough space to get into the tank easily. If I hang the lights from the ceiling how far from the top of the tank is to far? And same question as above regarding glass cover on tank?

Thanks

New tank? Glass covers tend to keep pJ levels down. The O2/CO2 exchange takes place at the water surface. That's why you also want to have a rippled surface by pointing a power head towards the surface to break it up.

Hang the lights form the ceiling and keep them 4" - 6" from the tank top. You will need to clean the splash guard weekly (while the lights are off) from the salt spray.

Thanks for the info. The tank isnt new just the lights. It was just fish and live rock. I switched to r/o over a year ago. Got new light this week. Plan is to turn it into a reef tank

i have a 72bow as well but only a 4 bulb t-5HO and additional 2 bulb t-5HO behind it with the standard legs on it around 2 inch high. i took the glass canopy off and acrylic cover off and never noticed anything wrong. corals loved it, fish and water great. nothing wrong. when i put the cover on it does nothing. i just noticed over the fans is warmer temp coming out. personally dude your good, its all up to look. you want to hang it, go for it, you like the leg look. then there ya go. i do. here my tank with the t-5 on my 72 about a year old
