I have a 120g 48x24x24 my question is how high should light be of water ??

It depends...

If you are changing lights (from say T5's ) we'd need to know that as you would have an acclimation period from one kind to the other.

If this is a new (ish) tank, we'd ask what kind of corals you plan to keep, or already have.

Is it a fixture (what kind), or retro's in a canopy, that would be handy to know as well.

Usually people would suggest about 10" over the surface of the water.

i had a 120, i had a fixture with 2 250watt mh.. the fixture sat 6-7 in over the top on legs.. i had great results.. but i agree with kathy and would say it depends on your situation

it depends the k color of lamp if you going to go with 10 k about 10 inches from water if you some like 20 k about 6 inches !! also take in consideration that the closer you go you gonna have to make sure of water temp.!
