Potential stock list for my 125g Reef Tank - help me out

Ok so I was just doing some planning today and I was thinking about what fish I would like to keep

First let me tell you about the aquarium:

• 125g RR tank - 6ft long
• I want to do a reef this time around, so in the near future there will be corals and a vast array of inverts

Here are some fish I was thinking, by no means is this final, this is just all the fish I was interested in

Help me select whether this is too much, too little, the right amount
Tell me if there are fish on there I should be weary of or maybe another species I should check out

• 8 - Green Chromis
• 1 - Hippo Tang
• 1 - Yellow Tang
• 1 - Powder Blue Tang
• 2 - False percs (orange)
• 1 or 2 - False percs (Black)
• 4 - (3F, 1M) Lyretail Anthia

and then obviously more inverts and coral

and whatever stock list we come up with will probably be added over a span of 3 months


so the question is:

• is this too much or too little?
• are there any issues that may arrise with this stock list
• anything on the list I should remove
• anything I should look into adding to the list
• and any other input you may have

well there are alot of fish you could add if u like more then others. i would take out the powder blue tang. they are not only a tad bit difficult, but will end up too aggressive most likely. anthias can be difficult. the mixing of clowns if you want to do so would be better to add the same day. if you get one set of clowns and they become settled and then add others they may have territory fight. in terms of what i would recommend might be things you dont like or hate. there is a huge list of what reef safe fish you could do. just take your time choosing and read up alot on them before you start to buy.

ok so lets take the powder tang off the list for now

for the clowns I figured that would be the only way


I had 1 pink square anthia in my 55g for about 8 month before a long power outage cause a huge crash, she was doing great and wasnt really bothering anyone

What would you say is difficult about them? maybe I just got lucky



the only problem I had with her was knocking things over

In general, anthias are delicate in terms of water quality, and must be fed (which in itself isn't always easy) often.

I agree with the above regarding the Powder Blue. Although one of my favorite looking fish, they will outgrow your tank eventually, and are too aggressive, especially with the two tangs. Some will say the Blue Hippo tang will outgrow your tank as well.

Finally, although some will say that you can have more than 1 set of clowns in a tank, many others will say it's not a good idea. I am one of those. As they mature, clowns get aggressive toward each other, especially the black and whites. (....although not as aggressive as Clarkis or Maroons, for example)

that is too many tangs, for a 125 i would try to cut it down to 2, and the false percs try to keep it down to one pair, if you gegt more than that they might fight. try a wrasse or a reef safe hog like a twin spot or a peppermint and a goby-randalls thats my favorite but thats your call. the anthias are nice but are for experienced hobbyists and are a little delicate and need fully established aquariums besides the fact that they need to be fed 2-4 times a day.

the anthias and the chromis also tend to pick on each other, slowly killing off the weakest in the shoal or harem until you just have one big guy left.

I have read that about blue green chromis but that is not always true. In fact I have 4 in my 75 and a friend has 5 in his 125. I would leave them on the list.
The anthias though could easily dominate the tank.

I have the similar dimension tank but slightly taller. Mine is a 135 72x18x25.

I have the same fish list and only recommendation would do one pair of clowns and either the yellow tang or powder blue not both.

My stock list is:

Hippo tang
Yellow tang
Mystery wrasse
Cherry fairy head wrasse
Mandarin
Bi-color blenny
2 ocellaris clowns
Yellow watchman goby
Lawnmower blenny

All these fish and no problems whatsoever again ymmv but I'd say you be okay. I wanted to do a powder blue, but with the yellow tang I can almost guarantee there would be fighting b

Ill recommend to you, invest in quality, not quantity. You will be happier at the end and will save money by purchasing once and enjoying every day.

I have a 125 as well and my stock list is

1 Yellow Tang
1 Blue Hippo
1 Powder blue tang
2 Lyretail Anthias m/f
2 clowns
1 purple firefish
1 Flame Angel
1 Banggai Cardinal
1 bi-color blenny
1 royal dottyback

and the general lol i call him that a jewel damsel he keeps the tangs in check!!!

Havnt had any problems with the tangs at all the yellow tang actually is the oldest in the tank he has been there for over a year and a half and the powder i just put in about 1 month ago and the yellow tang hangs out with him all the time....when i did add the powder i did feed the tank prior and shut off all lights and waited a bit before putting him in.
