I have a Montipora that has developed a green algae on the skelaton. I tried blowing it off with a powerhead and turkey baster to no avail. The polyps have receeded but seem to desire to push out of the skelaton. I am currently doing a series of massive water changes due to rise in phosphate. Getting a reactor this week to deal with that in the long run. How can i get this algae off the skelaton to allow the polyps to extend. Any help would be appreciated.
P.S. Phospate issue is a result of the tank sitter meaning well. (overfeeding)
Really would hate to lose this piece.

also any recommendations for reactors. i was thinking of biopellets in one and carbon and phosphate in another and was looking at the nextreef dual chamber. Thanks guys and gals

In order to make more precise recommendations, it would be very helpful to know your full range of testing parameters, ie: pH, alk, mg, ca, even ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and phosphate, SG, temp, etc. How old are your bulbs?

Based on your 2nd post, it seems like you want to combine carbon and phosphate remover in the same reactor. This is not a good practice. Phosphate remover requires a very low flow whereas carbon can use a higher, 'fluidizing' flow. If the phosphate remover is run with high flow it can break down to a powder and make its way through the sponge filter pads within the reactor and return to your tank. This is not good at all for your livestock.

The Nextreef line of reactors are excellent. Very well built and capable of handling large systems as well as smaller systems with the MR1-Shorty. The MR1-Monster you're considering is a really nice reactor. Without knowing the size system you've got I can't make a true recommendation of reactor. Many reefers are extremely satisfied with the Two Little Fishies Phosban Reactor.

Hope this helps,
Russ

Thanks Russ,
The tank is a 110 gallon Aquavim
Bulbs are running at about 1 year now and the fixtures is the 8 bulb extreme. Gonna get the current readings this afternoon so things will be more accurate. Temp is at 80. I was considering that i might pulverize the phosphate media and thats why i figured the 2 chamber would allow me to separate carbon and the phos. media. Was considering the biopellets though and did see nextreef does have a special rector for it but don;t know if it is necessary. Also i know the reactor size is overkill but i do see going bigger someday.

My initial reaction is with your bulbs running at the one year mark. I would suggest replacing the daylight bulbs since those are the ones that will skew the original spectrum after that length of time. This can cause an algae outbreak. What bulbs are you running?
