I have a 38g tank and the water temp has constantly been between 82 and 85F. It goes above 85F for a hot day. I'm in NYC and the summer here is scotching hot.

I did use a fan to blow the tank and it managed to keep the temp below 85, but it couldn't make it go under 80F.

I also tried the ice cold water bottle and the ice bottle turned warm (the ice melted) 10 mins after I floated the bottle in the tank.

Do I need a chiller? I know they are expensive, but I really dont want to see the animal suffer or die due to high temp.

What are the pros and cons of using a chiller? I appreciate all inputs. Thanks in advance.

If your temps are reaching 85/86 degress, then yes you need either a chiller on there or need to keep an A/C on in the room the tank is in.

The frozen water bottles help, but you need to be there to change them on a regular basis. Fans will usually only bring the temp down a degree or 2.

You might want to try running your lights from late afternoon to later at night and avoid them being on for the hottest part of the day, or at least shorten your light cycle.

What type of lighting do you have?

The only con I know of running a chiller is the cost of electricity, but you need to balance that against the cost of replacing what dies due to the heat,
Best to keep it so it vents out a window as chillers generate a LOT of heat to keep your tank cool enough.

The pros - your fish/corals will live & peace of mind for you :)

ok, thanks for the input. I guess the chiller isn't for me due to the heat it generates. The room is already hot enough.
