I want to start a nano reef

Hey guys thinking about getting a nano tank of sum sort a 12 gal or 24 gal. I'm looking to find out which one I should go with the jbj or the biocube. I like the jbj it seems like it's more for a reef than the bio cube. So I just wanna know what you guys suggest. Thanks!

Both are great starter tanks imo. My first tank was the Biocube 14. If you get it, try to get the updated version. You can tell by looking at the back wall. A square area on the back wall is unpainted so you can put a light on the outside to grow some chaeto. Good luck dude

you will eventually get urself started with regular tanks, might as well research and start now, it's much more fun and challenging than all-built-in ones.

Thanks for the advice.. I'm actually not totally new I 55 gallon tank and a 46 bow both saltwater but I want a small tank for me the 55 is more for my mom and 46 is more for wifey actually the 46 is wife's I don't have to much control on that tank accept when I get mad because It looks dirty then I end up cleaning it which I don't mind but her setup is such a pain in the neck gotta move couches and tv stands. The 55 gallon is sort of mine my mom feeds them and turn the lights on and picks what she wants in their. I clean the tanks and buy upgrades for it and change the rock every now and then to make it look new for my mom but I feel like I just service the tank. So I want something small but very cost effective and something that won't crash in a year or two..

I don't know how true it is but if you are looking for tank stability, I've heard from other MR members that it's easier to maintain when your tank is larger.

Petshopboy that is true because it takes longer for things to change or go wrong in a larger amount of water than it does in a small amount of water. basically all you have to do for a nano is keep a sharp eye on your parameters because they can swing very quickly

That's exactly what I was told. I only have a 26 gal and would love to upgrade to a larger tank but I just don't have the time right now to do it.

I understand the risk of a small tank but don't have room for much more.. But also love the look of a nano. So which one should I go with like to here sum more thoughts on which is best for a nano reef

My Nanowave9 is nice for a beginner. I have made so may changes to it I could have started with a regular tank and pieced it together.

That will depend on how much u want to drop $$$ on a nano.Low end, high end. what will u want to keep ( livstock ). There are so many choices out there. Do u want one from the lfs?
do u want to have one custom built. Do u want an all in one?. Do u want one that can be plumped to a sump? Ultimately The choice is yours. And that is all that matters that ur happy. Also u say u don't have time for a larger tank. A nano takes time also especially bc it's a smaller body of water. whatever you choose good luck and enjoy.

And if you ever want to uppgrade, you can always sell it ( and realy get your moneys worth ) or use it for something else. Don't get their sumps, you can pick one up from CustomKing ( he's a member her at MR, well built and great prices). For lighting, you can DO IT YOURSELF on the hood that comes with the tank (go with T-5's retrofits. If you need any help you can PM me, I'm an electrician. Good luck

I want something less than 300 rite now. Not looking for something to crazy looking for 12 - 24 and not trying to go over board on this little tank would. Been eyeing the jbj 24 today just pissed they still charge for the shipping lol. Thanks guys any more advice is always good

Well I do sort of know a way around that. This just means that you have to do a lot of work. You can go grab a 5 gallon tank, some black acrylic and a small pump. Than cut the acrylic into two pieces one piece that will fit the width of the tank and the other piece so that it will be about 4 in long and almost deep enough to reach the bottom but still enough room for water to get under. on one side of the bigger piece you cut teeth and make a fuge in the first area and in the second put the pump. this also means that in the bigger piece you are going to have to drill a one for the pump and than seal it. after this the real work starts. You add all the sand and a small amount of rock maybe 5 or 6 pounds. You have to do water changes every week and i wouldn't add any fish but corals would be your center piece. all this will cost you under 100 dollars except the corals. i know of one fish you can add but its about 1/2 in and only purple i forget the name though sorry. Thats just what I can add. If you want more info just ask.
