Was walking the dog and popped into a local shop for some plant supplies and stumbled upon a whole grocery isle of fun stuff for the tank at good prices, including bags of empty shells of all sizes. It's called Jamali Floral & Garden 149 West 28th St. (between 6th & 7th). I just bought a huge piece of barnacle, wrapped up in plastic for $10. I washed it off and have it "curing" in saltwater in my otherwise empty QT. Will let it sit there for the next week. My Gobies are gonna love it.

Just something to keep in mind - the big barnacle looking rock (it's a bunch of hollow looking openings about the size of a golf ball?)

Be sure to blow the detritus out of them with a turkey baster weekly, they tend to get a lot of crud settling inside of them :(

Just please be wary of the items you put into your tank. Some items may appear to be realistic and be made of ceramic or some other material and painted with lead or who knows what. Add that to your tank, let alone a saltwater tank and who knows what ill effects it can do to your tank. I would rather purchase a piece from a member here or from a petstore. JMO...

Kathy, thank you, Yes the big purpley ones, very good to know and I will be sure to wash that crud out. There was detrius exactly as you mention in a few of the barnacles so I washed it out before adding to the QT, but I get what you are saying about keeping an eye on it.

Ozone, I have a dog for 10 years so when it comes to my pets, I'm rather paranoid about what I give them (I won't even give her dog toys from pet stores if other pets can access the toys in the store). But, I had looked at the same exact barnacles at Absolutly Fish just a week ago and they were the same brand. The LFS wanted $50 for them and this shop charged $10. I think it comes down to the fact that there is a smaller customer base for LFS so they have to charge more to pay the rent while other retailers may have a bigger clientel and can spread the costs across the board. But I do absolutly agree with you that it's important to watch what goes in the tank- items painted in China should probobly not go in the tank:)

I imagine that you're spot on with that comment... Have you seen what they charge for arrangements in the flower district? They're doing just fine without the added barnacle income :D Haha
