I had the same problem on one of my overflows that drained straight down into my sump. I put a ball valve after my bulkhead to slow down the drain, it seemed to quiet it up for me.

This is the ball valve I added. My system seems to be very quiet now.

adding any type of valve to your drain requires u to have an extra drain incase of any clogging. As for the op's question, i would suspect it to be a change in flow, if nothing in the piping is clogging it i would look at the return pump for anything that maybe trapped inside or maybe deterioration of the impeller.

If you have an air hole on the highest pipe of the durso stand pipe I would check that is is not clogged up.

I had a similar issue about a month back, where the water level on the overflow was going up and down. Every 30 seconds or so I would get a water flushing (like the toilet) sound from the tank. I cleared out the air hole and resolve my problem.

Hope that helps, Good Luck
