whats up guys? are the little black snails that are all over our new york beaches reef safe? if so, has anyone put any in their tanks?

mud snails.i kinow peple that tried putting them in there sump but they die off quick.who wants rotting snails in there tank.reason for die off is temp of our tanks

Mud snails do very well in a reef. Wait until the water warms....putting them into a warm tank when they have been living in the cold will not work, even when acclimated. But when the weather warms, toss in a bunch. They don't even need acclimation, as they are intertidal and can deal with wide swings in parameters. I've had some last for many years.

They are called onyx nassarius snails. They will strip your reef a little too much most of the time. They eat everything in your sandbed. I think they are also risky to clams.

these r your " Ilyanassa Obsoleta " aka mud snails selling on ebay for dirt cheap.
the ones you want are Nassarius Vibex.

Ilyanassa obsoleta are purely scavengers. They never hurt anything living. I have had them for years and never saw any damage from them, even to my clams.
