Budgeting fish tank/supplies/livestock, etc...?

I know most of us spend too much money on our fish tanks... I thought I'd take the opportunity to ask other members how they have saved themselves money. I mean I know there's the obvious answers, buy less, research before you buy, etc... I am looking for more in depth answers about how people have saved money and just generally spend less money, what corners can be cut. Thanks in advance for the help.

the For sale/for trade forums have been my friend. I bought almost everything through them. When I did buy brand new stuff, I went through the vendors who usually gave a little more of a discount compared to other websites.

Plus, when It came time to sell things, I always found someone in need.

DIY is deceptive because if you price everything out, you would probably come out cheaper, but you don't often factor in the time and the things you screw up that you need to rebuy.
