Hi Guys and Gals,

With so many on-line coral vendors nowadays, it's hard for me to know who I should buy from. Mostly I make my decisions based on the types of corals that are available on a vendor's website...but my purchase experience ranges widely from great to god awful.

For my marketing class paper, I thought I do something different and talk about the importance of customer service to consumer's purchase decision. And what better industry to focus on than the on line coral sellers?

Please help me understand your thoughts on:

  • Would you rather support a vendor with excellent service but so-so product selection or a vendor with great product selection but so-so customer service?:letitallo
  • Who are the coral vendors that offer the best products:spin:
  • Who are the best coral vendors on line for customer service:scratchch

Thanks for sharing!!!!!

i can answer the last question for you from personal experience. live aquaria is a little pricey to buy from especially if your used to the prices of vendors but their customer service is the best ive even dealt with. i had 2 shipments with them the first one i had no problems whatsoever. the second shipment there was a death so i called up i just tole them my name and they found the order they asked what was wrong i told them it was DOA. no more questions after that they just said ok your money has been refunded to your paypal account. i didnt need to take any pictures or anything. i feel bad that some people can take advantage of that and rip them off because of how easy it is to get refunded but at the same time it makes it easier for the person that actually does a have a problem with the order. so i would definitely recommend them as having great customer service but not the best pricing or coral selection.

I'd rather buy from a company with excellent customer service.

Diver's Den (the WYSIWYG part of LivaAquaria) has the best customer service of ANY on-line store I've purchased from. They can be a bit pricey, but at other times I've found their $ to be excellent - $99 for a helfrich firefish that has been QT'ed and eating - awesome.

My favorite on-line store for hardware is Reefgeek.com. I had a question and e-mailed them. They replied/answered the same day! Knowledgeable, honest and courteous. Great prices on t5 lamps too!

I would rather buy from a vendor that supports our site. Taking care of the ones who help support this site is important.

does any of our vendors offer 14 day live guarentee or member discount ?

+1 on foster and smith and the 14 day live guarentee is a huge bonus, for equiptment if not bought from members on here then aquarium specialty and premium aquatics, i like free shipping and no tax. and both have excellent customer service

Both..I don't see too many vendors contributing post wise but I do see Russ and Jim from Saltwater Critters a lot and also Dom from Diamonds of the reef. They are all really good guys.

Russ from Saltwater Critters is awesome, he is always available and has answered many of questions for me.

Dom is a stand up guy and awesome he is in the hobby/a vendor for all the right reasons. When someone mentions they want a fish I recommend Dom based on my multiple positive experiences and he takes the time to answer any questions that pop up in my head at weird times heh.

Live aquaria won't meet you at 2 am when you need to get something either.

For me, within the past months all I ever shopped from for my products was ONLY saltwater critters. Russ has became a good friend for me and always looks out for me. He does not treat people like customers. He looks out for one another. I considder russ a silent vendor. He is one of the guys on this site that will actually help you out with a problem or issue and not just say "on just buy this from me" and call it a day. He will try to help you find your problem and figure out a solution and call it a day, and then if you tend the thread asking where you should buy that product to fix your issue, he will randomly go "oh we carry it", and after all the advice, you would never guess he even sold products lol. I go to his place ALOT, and I could spend 10 bucks, or spend 500 bucks, don't matter, he will find the time. And if I want something, and he knows it's garbage, he will flat out say it, not hold back so he can make the sale. When a vendor makes an effort to be a friend, and not a in it for the money, thats why I always buy from him. And honestly, even if he was a bit more expensive then other vendors or lfs, id STILL buy from him. Rather give my money to someone who deserves it then some random website company.

For fish and corals, it varies. Mainly coral has only been manhattan aquariums. I go on Sunday's only, mainly because Sunday they have a couple more people working there I feel or at least available to help me. They do get very busy at times and it gets annoying waiting for service, but is not their fault. So, Sunday's I like to go there and buy my frags. I also like ocean gallery II. They don't have as cheap of frags like manhattan aquariums 5,10,15 dollar frags, but you get what you pay for. Most of the frags are starting at 20 bucks a pop, but your getting a more reasonable size frag or more vivid color. Very nice place. I go to absolute fish, but rarely buy from them. Staff I feel is more in it for the money and inexperienced. I ask questions that I feel they cannot answer, and prices are ..................... Let's just say if you buy 2 decent corals, you maxed your credit card limit for the day. I have not yet been to saltwater critters live stock place over at jims, so I cannot personally say anything about there live stock, but what I can say is I bought 2 corals from them at the frag swap, and they are my top favorite corals in my tank. And the price...I don't know if it was a special swap price or what but super super cheap. If I did make the big trip to go to his place, I honestly would max out all my credit cards instantly there haha. Wayne pet place I stop at only because it's on the way home from manhattan aquariums, but never buy from. Live stock does not look like it use to. Corals are always dead, fish are very inactive and the water is very stagnant. Not to mention they battle algae ALOT. Natures cove is probably the worst pet shop I ever been to. If I had a nickel for every time I heard they wiped someone whole tank out because of ick one more time I'd be a millionaire. Not to mention I don't think anyone wants to spend 35 dollars for a little purcula or 130 dollars for a flame angel. It's hilarious, I use to take pictures of the price tags and send them to friends and they would think it was a joke or prank lol.

So in the end... Saltwater critters is the only place I deal with for products, and for live stock, manhattan aquariums and ocean gallery II are my favorites.

I have heard nothing but excellence about Dom, yet sadly never placed an order with him still today. Mainly because my tank is packed as is with fish lol. Kind of wish I had no fish and got all my fish from him lol. Much larger selection of rare/different fish for was cheaper then any lfs.

If your looking for fish, it should be a no brainer and go to Dom

If you happen to be looking for a fish tank Jesse over at Elos provides superb customer service and really can't be beat once you've dealt with him. I'm sure everyone who has talked to Jesse would concur.
