I have a culture started with DT's. It's the new formula though. It has some species of diatoms that out compete the phyto for the nutrients. I'm working on filtering the diatoms out, and just getting the phyto.
You're welcome to a 20 oz bottle of the filtered stuff.
bc can u show me your setup for the phythoplankton i have some dt that i want to culture. and how do u add the stuff into the tank do u add alot of it ?
Ricky,
It's just a 2-liter soda bottle with a piece of rigid air tubing stuck in it. Put a valve inline so you can control the bubbling. All you want it to do is gently bubble.
In the bottle:
saltwater made with tap water to 1.019
5ml Miracle grow liquid plant food (make sure you get the kind without copper in it)
'dash' of dt's.
16 hours light, 8 dark. Let it brew for a month or so then bottle it.
Now. the new formula of DT's has a species of diatom in it. So you can't culture it without culturing the diatoms. The diatoms out-compete the phyto for the nutrients.
When I bottled it, I filtered the whole 2 liters through a 100 micron filter sock. (I wish I had a 50 micron) Then I let the whole thing set for 24 hours to let the diatoms settle.
then I syphoned off the top to fill the bottles.
I've been putting about 2ml every couple of days in my 20 gallon. You have to start small so you don't flood the tank with nutrients. I also target feed my clam once a week. I have a bottle I've cut the bottom off. I put it over the clam and squirt in 3-4 ml of phyto. then once the water in the bottle is clear, I take the bottle out of the tank.
Reefoman, check your pm. I should be home tomorrow until noon or so.
