The easiest thing for you to do is get the same base as the parents have. Its unlikely that the parents are going to just drop the baby off without its carrier/stroller. Get the base, use the carrier/car seat and you will have a smooth transition.

Depending on the size you just might be better off getting a new one.

I think you're right about the staging. I just realized that the sand is extremely clean and the glass has no signs of coraline. Even the silicone is clean. That wouldnt be the case for a tank that looks as established as that one does. At least not for the most part.

That absolutely correct. You have to take head pressure into account. I had a 5 gl bucket of RODI water right next to my sump. The water only traveled about 2 ft up and then down 2 ft into the sump. A MJ 900 worked very well.
