  1. Southdown sucks!! HELP

What you are going through is normal with any type of sand that is the size and composition of southdown. It took my tank days to clear up enough to see and then several more before it was crystal clear. It will take some time for the bacteria on the sand to grow. Your live rock will help see...
  2. Reef Chemistry Calculator Beta, for calcium and alkalinity.

Thanks everyone! To answer a couple of questions: 1) This is meant to be a guideline. The calculations right now cannot determine the side effects of chemical additions at this time; use common sense and the detailed directions of each product. 2) I'll try to think of a way to add time...

  10. Best Public Aquairums in the USA!

I was at the Newport Aq about 1.5 years ago. The biggest disappointment there was the reef display that was quite large, I think 20-30 ft long, but nothing much in it. Outside of that, there wasn't anything striking or unique that I can remember. The tunnel was pretty good. The Ripley's...

  16. Chem challenge! rasing pH without raising Kh?

I think your parameters are not too bad. How do your corals look? Are they in distress? What test kits are you using? If you up you Ca and let the dKh drift down, that would work. An easy answer is to do a substantial water change; it will always help ionically imbalaced problems. mgk

www.exoticfish.com seems to have relatively inexpensive rock. He's been running specials this summer around $1.65 - 1.99 a pound. A couple of buddies and I got some from there and it was not bad, some colored, some not. It was not cured, so we had it in a curing tank for 6-7 weeks. mgk

  20. Car powered inverter...

This past winter I was unfortunately able to test my car inverter. We had a 23 hour power outage. The outside temps were in the 30s. The house temp was dropping. I lit a fire in my wood burner and hooked up my "400w" car inverter. What is not clear is that you cannot use 400w of equipment...
