  1. Petition to List 83 Species of Corals as Threatened/Endanger

I don't want to clog up the board but here is some chatter from the NOAA Coral list server. From: "James Cervino PhD." <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [Coral-List] ESA Listing for 82 corals To: Peter Sale <[email protected]> Cc: [email protected] Message-ID...
  2. Petition to List 83 Species of Corals as Threatened/Endanger

I think when you talk about listing a species you have to talk about more broadly what is the goal of such listing and if that goal can be met.
  3. Petition to List 83 Species of Corals as Threatened/Endanger

Honestly, this is what CITES is for, not ESA. If a group is not happy with CITES is the option left? However, what does ESA listing do for any of these species? Most likely, nothing but make those listing it feel better. That is the real question here, what does listing do for the species...

  6. Heater Advice - 6000 gallons

8KW, wow that is some serious power. Just to give you an idea, I used a 6KW heat to heat 300 gallons of water from 16C to 26C took about 30 minutes to heat up. We used it to heat incoming water in a header tank, so the water would drain out, then fill back up and the heater would re-heat...
  7. Heater Advice - 6000 gallons

They are but you are likely correct. They will size it for him.
  8. Heater Advice - 6000 gallons

http://www.process-technology.com/ Aquatic Ecosystem sells them. I've used them for more than 10 years. They will help you size it. I'd think a 1800 Watt unit would do. Your looking at about 300 bucks or so. Get an L shaped heater.
  9. Thousands of exotic animals seized in Arlington

Well that should raise some eyebrows are the wholesale/retail community. PETA did the same thing in University of Utah, uncovering some pretty nasty stuff. http://www.peta.org/FeatureUtahLabs.asp

  13. Invasive (Exotic) Species

Jay, There was an importer that use to operate for years in Fort Lauderdale, now out of business, he use to dump his sick or unsaleable fish in the pompano beach inlet. This had nothing to do with trying to establish population, only mere stupidity of the operator. I think that is why you...
  14. Team Obama Ocean Policy

I've set at fishery meetings, workshops, etc and I've always been dumb struck at the stupidity used to make fishing rules. Another interesting term used in fishery manager lingo is "equitable" which in no way means equal or any derivation there of.
  15. Team Obama Ocean Policy

Part of the problem, most of it, is that NMFS has always interjected social justice in to the fishery issues. That is how they can say well we have to let longliners put out 5 mile lines of hooks and kill thousands of sharks, turtles and marlin to catch a swordfish. That is what they mean by...
  16. Team Obama Ocean Policy

I'm not certain of the agency structure. I know that NMFS is a large part of the problem. So if they are removed from this that would be a good thing, most likely not. NMFS is like the FAA in the sense that the commerical fisherman are their customer not the citizens or resources. That is how...
  17. Team Obama Ocean Policy

Mitch this is classic precautionary approach. It's talked about a lot as the correct approach to resource management but hardly ever realized.
  18. Gulf of Mexico Stony Coral Collection

Ret, Are you talking about some of the stony corals that are growing on the oil rigs. Specifically Tubastraea?
  19. New European Restrictions

It's mostly the introduction of diseases that scare the pants off the ecologist not the target species, rightfully so.
  20. Florida Becoming "Club Med for Pythons"

I wonder how they taste. Maybe they need to bring in the chefs and do some demonstrations, aka lionfish. The sad part is that the State moves so slowly on these things that the population will get even more out of control long before they figure out how to deal with it.
