  1. Disadvantages in low flow reefs...

Just add a powerhead or two not aimed directly at the coral. Should be good. You need good flow to avoid dead spots where crud can accumulate. A reef tank should turn over about 10 times per hour. I have 2 Penguin 1140s and whatever my Rio on the return is churning water in my 55, thats at least...
  2. Hermit crabs

I have a bunch in my tank. For the most part I love mine, they are fun to watch. My hermits include 4 Zebras, 1blue legged, 3 crimson, 2 Halloween, and two different unknown ones a white one "Gandalf" and a black one "Sauron". The only one I hve a problem with is guess who? Sauron. I came home...

  4. bristleworm

The name bristle worm describes a large family of worms, most are relatively harmless sand sifters and scavengers. There are a few species however which are bad news. Not being a big fan of worms myself I have an Arrow crab that gets rid of any, and contrary to popular belief mine i very well...
  5. Catastrophe

Thats the only thing I can think of too since madarins dont eat normal food that everything else does. Do some a good water change to help get rid of ammonia and any chemical in the water. That reminds me, got to inform the pest people not to spray around the tank.

  9. Cleaning Crew for new tank, Suggestions?

I wodner who comes up with those packages, if they actually read what they are selling. I have a 55 gal, I dont want 55 of anything in it I find that about 8 of the bigger snails (margarita/turbo) and a couple little ones do the job adequitly. I recommend staying away from blue legged, everyone...
  10. Hermit crabs your thoughts

I am a big fan of hermits, especially zebra hermits. I only have one blue legged butsince he doesnt have his gang he doesnt cause any trouble. My Crimsons are lazy for some reason and just sit in their shells looking out, one just molted so I think water is good. Zebras are superactive nd fun to...

  12. PLEASE READ... im a noob and need HELP

2 or 3 months before adding a damsel? A: if doing a reef tank, dont bother with a damsel, go with a chromis, same price, just as tough, not aggressive. I put one in on day 2 and he is alive and well to this day. They are good for cycling tanks.
  13. Lime Crest = Southdown Sand???

Dont shoot me but if it says Tropical Playsand it is prolly Aragonite. My HDs only carry silica so thats prolly what I will use with a bag of LS and maybe a detrivore kit. I am starting a new tank soon, so have been doing my own research on this. I havent heard any negatives from anyone wo uses...
  14. anemone noob... need help.

I made that mistake, bring it back before it dies, Your tank should be well established before grabbing one of those. Bring it back so you can get store credit. At one month your tank isnt really fully stable, when that anemoni dies it will release toxins and those will prolly be enough in that...
  15. Arrow Crabs-are they reef safe?

Actually the one I have just sits under his rock. I dont know if he has eaten anything. He let the above mentioned zebras climb all over and barely budged. He might still be getting used to things.
  16. Arrow Crabs-are they reef safe?

I agree that the arrow is a bad crab, I will prolly bring him back early next week(maybe sunday even). As to the others if they become a problem I will trade them out. To me the crabs are my favorite part of the tank, I will never rid the tank of them fully.
  17. Arrow Crabs-are they reef safe?

HAHA I was watching the tank a little while ago. My favorite and fearless Zebra hermits were up to their usual antics again this time using the Arrow as a jungle gym. Judging by his response I dont think he had a clue what to think of it all. In my opinion Zebras are the best hermits to have in...
  18. Red Emerald Crab

Has anyone heard of one of these? I like collecting oddball crabs and would like to get hold of one. Anyone know of any online site selling them? From the little info I have gotten they are different from Strawberry crabs. Thanks much.
  19. crab update

Sorry Crabs are my favorite thing in a SW tank. If it has blunt claws then it prolly is not a danger to your tank. Most blunt clawed crabs I know of are algae eaters . I think you should keep it :)
  20. Arrow Crabs-are they reef safe?

I just returned a Coral Banded Shrimp today because he was beating up on my poor SallyLightfoot Crab. Soinstead i come home with an Arrow Crab because I had read they were good and provided the same function as a CBS without the hostility. He looks rather mean to me, whats your opinions? 55 gal...
