  1. waiter....i think there is a fireworm in my soup

Not a lot of animals can survive a salinity change like that, but there are macro algae and bacteria that can, and some can cause serious issues. If an animal has a piece of algae on it, you can cause all sorts of issues by flushing it.
  2. Beekeeping

It's been quite awhile since I've been on here, but I wanted to come back and update this thread. We didn't get bees the year we bought our equipment, but we did finally get them last spring. We started with two hives, and lost one over the summer, but the other one overwintered strong enough...
  3. Small Backyard Pond Build???

Here's some shots of the build: http://www.manhattanreefs.com/forum/nudibar/169125-i-dug-big-hole.html
  4. Small Backyard Pond Build???

Here's mine that I put in this year. I finally made progress on the waterfall and added a planter next to the waterfall. I'll see if I can take a more recent pic. I learned a lot building mine. Let me know if you have specific questions.
  5. I dug a big hole

You use a small deicer or just an aerator pump to keep a hole open in the ice. Nothing too crazy.
  6. Ebola in the US confirmed

Ebola in Texas and the Black Plague in Arizona! It's a good time to live in the NE. http://ktar.com/22/1769645/Arizona-health-officials-confirm-finding-fleas-carrying-plague
  7. Wife+Baby= break from reefing?

Tell her to move all her crap out of her closet, it's going in there. If she wants you to compromise be putting the tank in the closet, she can get rid of her shoes and clothes. Kids are more work than a tank... Just get a hard to keep fish and call it a day.
  8. Looking to start a Mix

Bare bottom tanks can look like you want, but it takes time. Eventually your bottom glass will be covered in coraline algae and coral. I've seen BB tanks that I'd never know didn't have sand. An RO/DI is a must. If you're not using a sump, you're already behind the curve. I've run tanks on NYC...
  9. I dug a big hole

More progress Here's a shot of the waterfall test. It's plumbed without glue in this shot, but now that I have it aligned, I can glue it up, build the rocks around it and I should have it looking good by the end of the weekend.
  10. Looking to start a Mix

I personally wouldn't even consider a 75g reef tank without a sump. It can be done, but it's much more difficult and something I wouldn't advise for a beginner. If you go ahead with it, you may want to look into keeping a bare bottom tank to help keep cleanup easier and nutrient levels lower...
  11. F SeaWorld!

Hope you're not a big beer drinker... AB InBev owns a lot more beers than you'd think and every one you drink potentially helps support Sea World.
  12. I dug a big hole

Update I got a pallet of PA fieldstone this past weekend and have gotten a lot of it laid down around the edges of the pond. I also started stocking some plants. It's starting to look like a pond! Still working on plumbing the waterfall and aquaponics bed. Haven't had as much time as I'd hoped...
  13. I dug a big hole

I have an aquaponics system in my basement and beans grow like weeds in it, so I'm not too worried. :wink1:
  14. I dug a big hole

I'm guessing you let them die and compost into the soil?
  15. Help with Fios

Pinging by name will help identify DNS issues. Try: ping google.com ping 74.125.224.72 If the IP address works and the name fails, you'll know that you have a DNS problem. If both work, you're online. If neither works... Tracerouting will tell you where the signal is dropping. From cmd...
  16. Help with Fios

Can you traceroute between devices? Also try pinging by name instead of IP to see if DNS is an issue.
  17. Help with Fios

My guess is you're double NAT'ing or having DNS issues. Make sure that DNS and DHCP are only enabled on one device. Keep everything on a single subnet and make sure that your DHCP scope doesn't encompass any of the actual network devices. That said, home networking devices of different...
  18. Help with Fios

    What do you need?
  19. I dug a big hole

I used a 15'x20' underlayment that I bought specifically for the rocks and roots. Since the aquaponics bed is basically going to be a 4'x2' filter, I'm not planning on an additional filter, but I may consider a UV filter down the line if I need one. This year I'm planning on planting peas and...
  20. I dug a big hole

Yeah, I'm worried about heron and bears. Between the bee hives and the pond, we're basically putting out a bear buffet.
