So i've been seeing a common trend in my tank as of late with wild acroporas giving me a 50/50 chance of rtn or stn while my cultured acros are perfectly fine. Are there any tips of caring for wild acropora that can increase the success rate?

They do seem much more fragile only thing that works is stability if u can keep ur parameters at right levels and keep them from swinging u should be good even then some acros just don't do well in captivity that's what tank grown ones r great they r proven in captivity so u have a little more leeway with them

What's your Temp and SG? Also a list of parameters would help

Temp 78-79

SG is 1.025

PH: 8.2

Alk: 9

Calcium: 440

Phosphates: 0

Nitrate: 0

Seems like only the wild acros get affected. Lighting is 250w MH with 2 65w PC actinics. I guess its just a craps shoot, I do notice that when a wild one encrusts it tends to be somewhat hardier then one that hasn't. Or in my case the ones that encrusted are doing well.

I just got a wild tabling acro that had some tissue loss going on. It's since
Stopped but has brown algae on it now. I would say they are a hit or miss. I would however say that u should always acclimate the heck out of them. Also maybe dip in revive or iodine that might help over all success

Interesting...I have 3 wild tabling acro colonies and never had a problem with any. IMO, wild acros adjust to your tank parameters if they are stable and etc...Also, I am on a Potassium dosing regiment and it really makes a difference not only to my wild acros, but on all corals

My tank is 90% sps. Never had any issues. Have a wild Aussie strawberry shortcake the size of my head. The table was in lfs tank with salinity that was 1.29. I acclimated right. My Params are right on, but it was stressed. I feel the algae is actually acting as a bandaid. It's starting to get sick color though.

it is definitly a crap shoot, all depends onhow the piece was handled before you got it.. if the lfs got it from a wholesaler that had it for a little bit and its doing well.. its got a better chance, if it came direct and then in the fish store then to you, all in a short time and it saw big temp fluctuations during trasnit you are likely to loose it... trust me i just lost a huge order.. had a shipment come from indo, flight landed in washington before coming to jersey it somehow missed the flight i got the shipment 12 hours late, lost almost All my sps on the order and the first to go was the wild stuff..

Thanks for the insight. Explains alot cuz I believe my piece just got into a fish store, but it was so nice I had to get it. Should have given it more time. Reefing is a lesson, sometimes an expensive one:type:

Well one mistake alot of sps keepers make is this ,,,these wild colonies come from stable water and they go from standard parameters to an sps tank that is jacked up Sps tanks generally are kept with high calcium 450 and alkalinity at 10-12dkh and when they put these wild colonies in they get shocked just my opinion I noticed that when I first started buying wild pieces and made that same mistake so now i put them in the QT tank which is just a tad above the norm and acclimate them to the main tank which is kept at 450cal,10.5dkh and now they do fine before they would was tissue loss or no polyp extension just not happy good luck you might be able to acclimate them slowly with success just hit and miss with me trying that out anyway its good to QT them against aefw ..sorry for going on..

the best thing to do if you want wild colonies is to keep your tank as close to natural levels as possible, and the zeo system does it best.. i keep my alk at 7-7.5 ca abt 400-425 mag 1250-1300 po4 and nitrates untraceable and u need to use amino acids and lugols.. i honestly feel like with out those (not talking zeo just supliments) numbers and additives you take an already slim situation and make it worse
