Kakado, my guess as to why the base is white may be due to not enough light getting to it. Actually this is common in birdnests and is not necessarily an indication of declining health IME. If you want to frag, cut down to healthy/live tissue.

The problem youir having is most likely flow . If birds nest dont have good flow throw there branches it will start to die at the base . Had the same problem with birds nest and now have no problem keeping at all.

Thanks, so this coral will benefit by being placed directly in the path of flow to ensure that the base is exposed to flow ( I assume that this is the same rule for all SPS).

I had a fellow reefer have a look and he also suggested I frag down to the point of last growth (but then again he probably just wanted a frag, well I gave him a pink and a yellow birds nest frag and a locally collected green zoa, in exchange I received a blue ric, red digi and a green birds nest) so I fragged it and ended up with about 8 nice sized frags.

It is just unfortunate that I had to frag this colony as it was nice and big, about 10 cm wide and 8 cm high. Also it came to me shipped in this condition.

A pic the pink frag.

How is your birds nest doing, from the pic I can see very nice polyp extension. Did you frag it.
