1. What makes it an effective image?

It is quite obvious what the subject of this photo is. The mouth and the eyes are in very sharp focus. I find the subject to be interesting.

2. How was the photo/subject lit?

I would say that the subject was lit by flash from above. The background is very black so the tank itself must have been dark. If the flash would have been from the front I would think you would see more light reflection from the background.

3. Does the image capture the personality or essence of the subject.

Very much so. What a face! He is looking right at the camera and appears ready to start a conversation at any moment.

4. Is there any question about what the main subject of the photo is?

None.

5. Is there anything that the Photographer could have done technically to make this a better photo?

To me this is a very good photo. The lighting and the colors are very good. The focus of the eyes and mouth are very sharp. DOF leaves the rear portions of the subject out of focus drawing the eye to the face.

Ha that's awesome!!
Something we haven't talked about is how humor makes for effective photos.
This makes me laugh.

You can actually see part of the reef in the left hand eye.
