Can somebody explain to me what exactly is an auto top off and how does it work/benefit a RR tank.

As water evaporates from the tank, it leaves behind the salt and such, and thus the tank needs to replenished with fresh water. Also, as it evaporates, the water level in the sump will drop (the tank level will stay the same). An ATO uses a float switch in the sump that will trigger a pump and siphon fresh water from a seperate bucket or tank slowly into the sump. This a) keeps your water level constant and b) keeps your salinity constant. Its just less daily maintenance that you have to worry about.
