Help! I can't get a handle on the bubble algae that is taking over my tank. Its growing over my polyps and everything else. All my readings are perfect and I have been using Catalina Real Ocean Water.

be very careful when trying to take them out, how big have they gotten, have you popped one trying to take them out because they will fertilize when popped. Carefuly push it out of the rock, or use a turkey baster to suck up or whatever works that won't burst it.

Well, yes i popped some at first. Some of them are pretty big and they are taking over. I keep trying to keep it under control, but it seems like it is a loosing battle.

The algea Valonia (bubble algea) is a macro algea so having good water does not mean that it won't curse your tank. Take your rocks out of your tank when you can and scrap them off while in a bucket of saltwater. If you have to remove them while in the tank use tweezers and have someone keep a 1/2 inch hose near where you are plucking to siphon out the juice if they poop. A minthrax crab will help too. Good luck.

Thanks Rob, I stand corrected. With these crabs I do wonder, for them to eat bubble algea they have to pop the bubbles so is that a bad thing?

I had valonia in my nano. I put in a emerald crab and I have not seen a bubble again.

They might pop them but they eat them as soon as they see them. Eventually they win the battle I guess.

Just so ya know, the Mithrax (;) to Rob) crab will only eat the smaller ones, just what it can get its claws around.

I've actually given up on mine, but remove what I can. I don't particularly worry about them popping when I do. I've read that popping does spread the spores, but if you've phyto filter feeders (like fanworms, etc) they benefit. Of course, I could just be in denial. Naaw...

Oi!

If it is green the emeralds will work as stated above, but if it is the red bubble algae, you
are screwed, I have the red and NOTHING is getting rid of it. All I can do is try to get
each colony off the rocks and hope that they don't 'leak'

Cheers!
