Hi all

I was wondering if anyone has any experience w stand alone digital salinity probes (non apex).

Like this one…

I had one (Pinpoint) maybe 15 years ago and it was never accurate, got rid of it within a few months.
You know Bud I also believed like you. But later in life I realized that most conductivity probes are never accurate.

If you mean consistent, even then I would say it's mostly user error that they don't get consistent reading. Air bubbles being main culprit.
I use Hanna , pinpoint conductivity, ice salinity probe and apex salinity probe.
For hobby grade all good enough. Gives you close enough reading.
Probes that are left continous have problem with bubbles. Once you shake that it's good.

Hanna amd milwaukee digital bench refractometer are best for one a day etc testing.

I was making water today. So I am sharing it.
Not saying these don't have limitations. But we can reduce them
For a probe make sure you rinse it. Then dry it. Then put in beaker and shake it for no air or air bubbles.

Ice cap I don't know. But Hanna and pinpoint both calibrate their machines and you can send them in whenever you like. It comes with a calibration certificate.
Best is use multiple devices
