I think I killed my hermit...

I though my hermit was Kilroy but then my cleaner shrimp was picking at it and nassarius were all over it. Do they do this to normal molting crabs or orlnly dead stuff?

I picked up the body and most of it was still intact but I flushed it thinking it was already eaten up. In hindsight it might've still been alive

Were there any empty shells in the tank for him to go into whenever he outgrew the present one? And did you notice a bad smell?
