Macro shot question

I just purchased my camera (Canon T2i) and also have the Canon 100mm Macro lens. I was trying to take some pics of corals and noticed that I can't take pics if the camera is in an angle pointing down to the coral. The pics are distorted. If I point the camera straight at the coral, than the pics come out fine. Is this common when taking macro shots through a glass? I would like to point down in an angle to capture some of the branches on SPS. This is my first time taking Macro shots.

This is common with any lens. Glass distorts light unfortunately, so you always want to be perpendicular to the glass with your camera.

its due to the refraction of light thru the extra depth of the glass when the shot is taken at an angle.

You can get a top down box to take photos from above, but there really is no way to adjust for the refraction through the glass.
