My Emperor Angel has Fin Rot

I recently aquired an Adult Emperor that looked great three days ago. Yesterday I came home to to find it breathing hard and all his fins rotting away; they actually turned white. My water parameters are all good. What can I do? I already added aquarium salt and some stress zyme to the tank.

The reason why I added aquarium salt was because the fish came to me with two wounds.

Will Melafix help in the healing of both fin rot and open wounds?

I still don't understand why you would add salt, does hypersalinity help?

I have never used melaflix in a saltwater tank, but found it quite usefull in these situtations in a freshwater tank.

I panicked last night and ended up calling them....I think the fish has a bacterial infection. Fin rot doesn't happen so quick from what I am reading online.....

Breathing hard and all his fins rotting away; they actually turned white, is a sign of ich or a secondary infection.

You want to treat with copper and a anti-biotic. Also has the fish lost some of it's color, looks pasty white, and is it sliming a lot.

I have a 20 gallon long tank that I can use for QT but I think this will stress him out even more; he's well over 8". I will perform a 50 gallon water change today on my 180; this should help.

This may be the cause - that's a large fish for this amount of room.

He was in an even smaller tank then mines. I'm currently in the process of setting-up a bigger tank.

While it may be better to be in your larger tank, it's still a large fish for that amount of room - have you tried using Pimafix? (if not, and you buy it, you must turn off your skimmer).

I will try that today. Have you had any success with it?

I have - actually with fin rot and other fungal or bacterial infections like this.

Don't overdose it for the sake of speeding up the process - you'll burn the gills right off the little guy

He was the first fish I ever losted in my tank of a disease. I've losted one other (blue face in my gallery due to my mistake)....I guess you just have to move one.
