Hey All,

New reefer here and my tank has been running since Dec08. Currently still using treated Tap water but I know I need toinvest in an RO/DI Unit.

My setup is a 45gal Tank with a 20L sump/Fuge. I average about 5gals a week for Top Off and do weekly 5Gal water changes.

So, I will need to make approx 10G a week of RO/DI water. I've been looking around the web and at some of this forums vendors for a unit. I see they have 50gpd units for under $100 and 75-100 for around $150.

As I'll be making such a small amount of water, is it worth spending the extra $50 on the larger units? Does anyone use those compact style ones?

Here are two examples:

some key components to consider when buying a unit don't always have to do with how many gallons it makes - least not for me - that drives how much you'll possibly need in an hour or even a day.

few things to consider:

1) You really don't need more than 4 stages in the NY Metro area - unless your in some weird area where the TDS (total dissolved solids) is off the charts (over 300), you won't need more than 4 stage (sediment, carbon, RO cart. and DI resin)

2) You should always get the unit with Auto shut off valve, and pressure gauge. inline TDS is a nicety, but they are often incorrect and necessitate a hand held as well to benchmark. I have both

3) Invest in a hand held TDS meter.

4) Invest in a kent (or like) float switch to shut unit off.
