Go for a six bulb t5. Tek light. Russ has them for $270 at salt water critters. You could do the 4 bulb for now for $210 but if your not sure what coral you want, go for six to be safe

Led is going to be around 500-600 to do

If money is not an option for with a combo of MH, T5 and led fixture.

Marineland makes a combo fixture that is 150w MH, T5's and moonlight LED's. The lights can all be controlled individually which will help you with only using what you need.....only catch is a 48" fixture is about $1000.

This will leave some options for you in the future if you choose to expand your corals to LPS or SPS.

With a 55 you can go with a 4 bulb, a 55 isn't that wide only 12"s. If you do plan on going with SPS in the future you might want to invest in the 6 bulb fixture so you don't have to buy a new fixture down the road. I'm reffering to T5 fixtures by the way. Just remember the more bulbs the more money in replacing them as well, if that is an issue. Figure 20 - 24 bucks a bulb for a 36" not sure the price on 48" bulbs. And with Metal halides you might need a chiller which will lead to more costs, and if you go with LEDS they cost more initially but overtime pay for themselves.

For a grand you might as well just all led. A six bulb t5 is way better of a choice and a fraction of the price
