I was wondering is it beneficial to run UV in a reef set up or not ?

Will it decrease the amount of algea I need to fight with ?

I understand that UV does not distinguish between good algea and bad one, but it still worth it ?

I believe having a uv sterilizer is a personal thing. Some people say a reef is better without and some say its good. I have a reef and I believe my uv is a life saver. With a combination of fish with corals. I'm not sure how well it controls algae, but my happiness with my sterilizer is that parasites are not a big issue. The only drawback is that if you want to keep fish that like copepods, such as mandrin fish, there won't be any copepods. But for my particular set up it works great. I guess it just depends on what you have in your tank. Hope someone else can help you out more.
