Something in my LR

When I look in the tank after the lights are off for about 1/2 hour. I have these "worms" that come out of the rock. They extend themselves in to the sand. I have seen them as long as about 3 inches, the diameter is less that 1/4 of an inch. When I turn the lights back on they seem to shrivel up and go back in too the rock. I will try to post pictures if I can get any.

My question....What are they? Are they harmful?

Sounds like our old friend the peanut worm. CHeck the HHFAQ - there is an entry on them there.
