Reefer
Please help me ID this snail. I see several of them at night. I haven't seen any on my clams. Are they good or bad?

I think it's a Peppermint snail. If it is, it's a beneficial snail.

This is most likely a Stomatella varia. It is a small reef-safe herbivore. A nice grazer that will reproduce readily and will consume diatoms with gusto.

That is not a stomatella in the first pic. Stomatella snails have flat shells, and that snail has a rather cylindrical shaped shell.

Although I don't have a for sure id what it is.

It is hard for me to tell from the pic, but due to the shine of the shell in I would guess that it is a cowerie of some sort. They tend to polish their shells with their oversized mantle keeping it rather clean and blemish free. They are beautiful snails, and tend to be fascinating. Unfortunately, they also tend to be carniverous.

Yeah, struck me as possibly carnivorous too :? I'd be careful. I have a habit of removing stuff I'm not sure of to another tank/sump for observation.

Speaking of moving, I'm gonna "shadow" this to the Hitchhikers forum for the benefit of those looking up info on snails. You get double exposure anyhow :)

Well, I found this pic that looks like it may be your snail. Of course there are many many types of snails and often they look similar.

From the family Marginellidae. Perhaps that can help you narrow your search. I couldn't find any info on habits, but I am work now and have limited time to surf the web.
