Gday people

Im new to this game well i have got 2 tanks 6g sw which i have had running for 12months or so and 100g sw reef which i have just set up. ( im in Aust so if conversion from ltr to gal may be wrong dont know just had a guess 4:1 ratio??????).

Anyhow my questions to u guys are; what is this shrimpy thing and is it good or bad?

i just got another 3 boxes of live rock and i managed to spot this little bugger amongst it all whilst inspecting. Im sure some1 knows what it is and if he is a goodie or a baddie??? Cant find him in any of my books.

It sort of looks like a centerpede but instead of legs it has paddles

Sorry pic isnt the best but is the best i could get on da digital.

Thanx for any help

It's the infamous mantis shrimp. We now have a forum for these things. Don't let it out of the jar until you do some reading on them. They can be nasty. Watch your fingers!

Welcome to reefs.org!

Try blueboard also for extensive info on these critters!

John,

Do you still have the pointer to the Hawaiian story on the large Mantis shrimps in the canal? Would be enlightening to point again... Of course, unless you were to feed your Mantis an exotic mix of steroids (actually, I suppose you just need to have your Mantis hang out at track & field competitions :) ), it won't achieve such a large size...
