I purchased this fish 8 + years ago and it was a substitute for a Goby - I was told at the time that it was an Engineer Goby - it has grown to about 18 inches long now and looks nothing like any engineer goby I have ever seen... Any one know what this fellow is? PS: the piggie has pellet food in his mouth. THANKS!

Thanks Matt & Andy,
I was questioning since he has gotten so big.... At this size he is really re-engineering the bottom of my tank! Appreciate your help! Pam

Thank you HClH2OFish, That is what I was thinking eel too but behavior and his mouth kept saying goby - but he is sooooo big and I keep seeing engineer goby with a white stripe down the back and his markings looked like a snowflake eel. Thought I bought a "pig in the poke" hee hee..... Anyway - I'm glad to know what he is for sure. Thanks

OK Before you tease me..... the Goby is not tallking to me.... It is the shape of his mouth that is like a Goby rather than an Eel..... <smile>

I think the idea is that they mimic juvenile marine catfish (venomous) when they're young. I've also heard reports that large groups of engineer gobies behave in a hive like social group where the juveniles go out and get food for a breeding pair. Interesting little fishie :D

Thanks Matt, he is a cool fish, I use to have a pair but sadly the smaller of them died a couple of years ago. I just had no idea they got so BIG.... I rarely see him completely out from under the rockwork he is quite shy - sometimes when the lights are out he comes completely out but otherwise he only comes out as far as he has to when eating. and since he is over 18" long - he doesn't have to come all the way out!

Actually my tank is a mess now. The size is 72 w x 30 h x 24 d. I have a 100 gal sump but with the displacement of 200 + / - lbs of live rock/rubble, a 6" sand bed and overflows. I actually have 270 gallons of water in the system. This tank was set up 9 years ago as a combo Jaubert / Berlin. I think the sandbed is my main problem but as always it is a combination of things going wrong. It is time for me to overhaul and I just recently joined Reefs.org to see what information I could gain toward my effort in revamping my reef.

The 18" long Goby I was questioning the DNA of is making a mess of the sandbed - above the protected bed. I am had an outbreak of cynobacteria - (red slime) which I got under control with a product called ultra life red slime remover - now I am having a brown diatoms and bubble algae (Valonia sp.) & hair algae problem. I have calupera in my sump with reverse light from my tank and a refugium and I dose kalkwasser and have some sort of branching black macro algae in my display tank. I Haven't introduced any rock into the system in a long time but have added macro algae, calupera, snails, hermits (unfortunately). Even my macro algae has hair algae on it. Sooooooooooooooooo I am doing a bunch of water changes and studying reef algae scrubbers and looking at other macroalgaes as the calupera is crashing..... I am thinking I have to disassemble the entire reef to take out the protected sand bed ---- which I think is calcifying and growing and pushing the sides of my tank out as the braces across the top of the tank broke and my tank is now 24 1/2 inches wide in the middle --- scary huh? Life was much easier when I had a smaller reef - my favorite size reef tank is a 72 L x 18 w x 18/20 h --- it was a standard 125 gallon (I don't remember the exact dimensions but it was a fantastic size) -- but I created a monster with this tank - plus it is all built in a cabinet system in my kitchen/family room.
