There is a hole in one of my live rocks that serves as a home for an animal with several yellow arms. They move independently, and curl themselves around things. They are smooth and about 1/2 to 1/4 of an inch long. It appears to be light sensitive.

Here are some really bad pictures of it. I will try to move it so that I can snap images from the clean glass.

Any ideas?

My first thought is a Sessile Cucumber.

How many tentacles - 5 (Worm), 8 (Coral), 10 (Cucumber) or some other number (monster)?

Well a worm can have a lot more than 5 arms, and a cuke can have a lot more than 10. But my gut feeling is that you're looking at a spaghetti worm.

I wish I could tell you how many legs. It is very sensitive and only comes out every great now and then. I have been calling it a crinoid, but the legs are very smooth. I am looking up images of Himerometra, and many seem rough, but that is my best guess too. Maybe it is just too small and I cannot see the feathery things.

It sure moves like a brittle, so maybe it is a spaghetti worm instead. I would like a spaghetti worm, but this is very vibrantly colored, almost neon yellow. (bad pics don't reflect this... sorry) I do not know of mason worms that get that color. It can curl each leg into almost a solid curly-cue doubled up on itself. Maybe my diver buddies will know more than I do. I will keep looking, but now I know what to look for: thanks!

Please pardon me for putting forward guesses that might possibly be wrong. In the future I'll be sure to refrain from such irresponsible behavior and leave it to the "experts".

Sorry if I sounded rude, but your initial post was a bit confusing. Please pardon me for correcting incorrect information.

I gave four valid guesses depending on what the poster could see. I can't see much in the picture and the number of tentacles is kinda important

Actually I think the responder who guessed Brittle star is pretty close.

Your guess is no more correct than mine until proven otherwise. Why not correct your own before condemning mine?

Didn't condemn it Guy. It could be a cuke for all I know.

I gave four valid guesses depending on what the poster could see. I can't see much in the picture and the number of tentacles is kinda important, if you can then you're just wonderful.

You also gave misleading information that implied the creature could be ID'd based on how many tentacles it had. That was what I was correcting.

Yes, your post was rude & condescending because I didn't give any information to correct, I don't have any information other that guessing what types of animals might look like that.

Actually I think the responder who guessed Brittle star is pretty close. Especially sisnce there are no known Terebellid worms with short Yellow tentacles

Yes you did!

How many tentacles - 5 (Worm), 8 (Coral), 10 (Cucumber) or some other number (monster)?

The implication here is that if it has 5 tentacles it's a worm, if it has 8 it's a coral, etc. Am I reading that right? Because this is what I had an issue with.

Whatever it is, I have one too,,, noticed it a few weeks ago. No idea what it is,,,, definitely not a spaghetti worm though,,,, I have hundreds of those in my tank.

Yeah, Guy was definitely right about it not being a spaghetti worm. Try as I might I couldn't find one with yellow tentacles :D The way he described the tenatcles moving independently definitely sounded like one though.

Is there any way you can take a more focused and larger pic of it?

The implication was supposed to be that if it has 10 tentacles then my guess is that it's a Sessile Sea Cucumber. I don't see how it implies that all Sea Cucumber in the world have exactly 10 tentacles.

It's sounding more like a Brittle Star or an small Anemone to me based on the description. If the "legs" are smooth then it's probably not a Cuke.

No, you're not bad, you're a great guy... seriously.

I just shouldn't post after repeatedly hearing "I hate you" from my 17 year old Stepdaughter. It puts me in the wrong mood to be a constructive member.

You caught me at a thin-skin moment, please accept my appology. We're both on the same side with the same goals, that's for putting up with me as well as you did.

Good morning Matt, I saw your avatar on reef.org- Potato-- loved it! That is pretty neat graphics/video. Can I ask how you accomplished the effect? Thanks, James P

Yeah, the thing has gone into hiding again. I will try to shoot it when it comes out again. It only comes out every great now and then and is super-sensitive. I allow red encrusting algae to grow on the back of that tank and green for my algae eaters. It is very hard to focus through. My front pane is very clear, so I will move it and try to shoot it when it comes out next time. Thanks all, for your help!

The legs on it seem smooth, but they may be rough up really close. If I had an underwater cam I could have gotten a better shot. I will try to entice it out with something yummy.
