Any guesses will be greatly appreciated! This guy, or rather guys, have srung up fairly quickly, and seems to be spreading. Given that it's translucent, would it be safe to assume it's non-photosynthetic? Thanks!

hmmm..

I'm not sure it isn't photosynthetic. Are those gas bubbles that it's giving off through respiration? Doesn't that mean photosynthesis?

All I can say is it seems to have gas bubbles inside the branches and is very gelatenous. Some times it's dark sometimes light. Today, it was translucent pink as in the picture above.

I wondered about the bubbles too, but I've noticed bubbles in some polyps of what looks like some kind of cup coral. Also, I can't really say for sure that the bubbles are inside or on the surface. It does appear gelatinous, like you said knowse. I'm at a loss after going through the algae databases. knowse, how large has it gotten in your tank? I haven't really noticed a color shift yet, but this is my tank at work so it's not under constant observation. I wish I had a better camera, because as neat as it looks on the pic I posted, it's even better looking in person! Thanks everybody!

On Wed. it was close to 2" tall and yesterday it was less than an inch tall. It does break very easy! I won't be able to get any new picts of it until sometime next week, but here's one from a few weeks ago.

It's one single "plant" with lots of branches, the base is about 1/4" around, just to give you some kind of reference.

[edit] Now that I've compared the two photos, your's seems to be more frilly at the ends of the branches, where mine is somewhat flater. I can't remember how mine looked when it was longer, but I still think it might be the same algea.
