Hi we have a crab that looks alot like this one in this picture I found, well anyway's any ideas on what type of crab it is? Came on something we purchased from lfs, or it hatched out of the LR, we been keeping an eye on him, but it does look alot like this one.

Well crabs dont hatch, they are planktonic then get bigger per se, yours came in the rock and is quite the bad crab. This is in the same family as the stone crab, notice the drak large pointed pinchers and the big body. They love to eat....I will leave it at that....oh yea and certain species in the family get eating size (for humans). My little hitchhiker wiped out 2 conchs, two snails, many bivalves, and I suspect two fish at night. unfortunately I had to wait untill he was two inches across before I could catch him cause they have little caves they prefer to run to, and of course the caves in the live rock go halfway into the rock. Grr

not sure exactly what he is, but I'd personally classify him as NOT reef safe. I probably burrows into the substrate to hide himself, as the coloration suggests, and he will probably pick at corals and maybe even fish.. as the pointy little claws suggest. I'm not an expert.. Its just my opinion.
