Stupid question perhaps....

It's probably going to sound stupid but I'm not wanting to kill my sps. I have dual metal halides on my 125g which makes the shimmer effect. If day the shimmering doesn't hit a specific area and I put an sps acro there will it receive enough light? Like the sides of my tank don't have a lot of the shimmering mainly on just the right. If I put a frag there will it still receive enough light to grow?

I think you should show a photo of your tank with the lights on.

Shimmer (with halide or led) is caused from surface agitation. Im thinking that If there is no shimmer on the edge/ends of the tank then it could be one of two things...

it doesn't have surface agitation
OR
there is not enough spread from the light.

just see if the coral is getting light? put ur hand above the coral to see if you get light from the mh.. (shimmer is just from water movement mentioned above)

I think there is no shimmer at all
