ADD is a banned topic at Manhattan Reefs. So I will pretend you didn't write that.

Nitrogen is the limiting factor in the wild. This means that the reason the reef isn't as productive as it can be is because there isn't enough nitrogen.

Ammonium (NH4) to nitrate and then reduction to nitrogen gas (N2) is only a basics of the nitrogen cycle. There are more parts to it then that. It is not a linear sequence.

Carbon is good in the aquarium. It feeds the microorganisms. The majority of plankton is made from carbon.

The presence of microorganisms is important especially sand burrowing ones.

A lot of these micro organisms prefer performing cellular respiration with oxygen. But when oxygen is not available it will use nitrates. This is why deep sand beds are good for denitrafication.

In short he is saying that proteins break down to amino acids, which will then break down and result in ammonia. This is when the nitrogen cycle starts. He is saying we should have a health populations of microorganisms to keep up with the nitrogen cycle. When you feed your tank the micro organisms eat and reproduce. After a several hours as food is not available the microorganisms die and release nitrogen.

He is basically all over the place explaing how different things effect the nitrogen cycle on the molecular level.gl
