personally i think you should get a external pump because no matter what type and size you get it's gonna bump up the temperature of the tank plus your skimmer pump is gonna add to it also, I've experienced this that's how i know...........................
If your gonna go external i'd go with either iwaki (jap model) MD-70RLT,
Blueline 70 HD ,Gen-X PCX-70 or the MD 55 External Water
Pump, 1,125 gph

You can determine how big of a pump you want by the amount of water you wish to turn over. for example a turn over rate of 3-5 times is a good start, that would give you 900 - 1500gph. Now you should take into account head loss, the calculator for head loss is a bit complex for me to explain I'm sure someone can chime in on that equation or just google and follow the directions. I'm sure you have your reasons for going submersible, and in that case I would go with the water blaster selection of pumps maybe the 7000 or 9000. these are made by coral vue.

I've been using the water blaster 5000 with good results and negative heat problems.
