Carbon Yes/No

I have a 29Gal biocube and upgraded the protein skimmer to a Hydor Koralia Nano-Skimmer. Do I need to use carbon to help keep the water clean

It is really not a need, but is it a good idea and the answer to that is yes and most do use it. Now, if you are doing allot of WC, ie., 50 % / wk, then the answer **may be no.

The only real drawback of any needed nutrient would be Iron. Howeve, many never sup Iron anyway.m

Would activated carbon be a way to carbon dose??

No, GAC is inorganic and does nothing for carbon dosing which is organic, such as Vinegar or Voka carbon dosing.

Is there a reason if water changes are done thoroughly and often that carbon would have a negative effect on the tank?

No, more on the order of few WC and carbon dosing having an impact. CD can be a fuel to bacterial explosions.
