No, All Alk kits we use are also testing for Borate as Borate is part of Alk.
Many " things " make up Alk, often called Total Alkalinty ( T-Alk ). The 3 major components are Bicarbonate, Carbonate and Borate. Of that, Bicarbonate makes up 90%, Carbonate 6.5%, Borate 3% and the other .5% other things.
The old SeaChem Alk kit you could get had all 3: Alk, CA (Carbonate Alkalinty) and BA (Borate Alkalinty). You tested for Alk and BA and subtracted the difference and got CA. This kit is no longer produced and was rather poor at being accurate for Borate,
The reason behind this kit and the Salifert Borate kit, which was much better, was to see just how much Borate we had, to see if we needed to sup it. SeaChem now only makes a combo Alk- pH test kit, no more Borate.
