Use a buffer when ALK is low as compared to Calcium. If you're using a 2 part and levels are balanced then don't use a buffer.

In other words, only use a buffer when you want to increase the Alkalinity but not the Calcium level. "Buffer" is a marketing term, think of it as adding Alkalinity, not as adding a buffer.
